PHASES AND FACTORS THAT AFFECT BEARD GROWTH

When venturing into something new, the best advice that people get is to research before investing. Nevertheless, many men have admitted to not knowing much about growing a beard before growing one any way.

In order to get a clearer understanding of a beard, we must get scientific for a minute…

A beard has 3 phases. These are the anagen, catagen and telogen phases. The anagen phase is the first phase when your hair grows faster than ever. This is simply the period of time when your beard grows to its fullest length. This can take up to a year to complete.

The second phase is the catagen phase. This is also known as the resting phase. That period when you notice your hair isn’t growing anymore…it’s not you. According to scientists, your facial hair actually needs a rest period.

The third and final phase is the telogen phase. This is when old hair follicles are replaced with new ones. In layman terms, your beard hair is basically replacing itself. A crucial way to ensure that this process ends with a beautiful, healthy beard is to maintain your beard routine with the wash, balm, oil, comb and brush.

You can literally grow a full beard in 4 months if you are determined enough!

Now that we have a better understanding of the beard phases, here are some factors that affect beard growth:

  1. Genetics- if your father has a full beard then you can expect to have one too. Beard growing genes can actually be passed down from one generation to the next.
  2. Origin- This is evident when you look at all our Arab, Indian/Native American, Latina and Greek members of the beard family. One’s race and origin can immensely affect the rate of beard growth as well as the length it can get to.
  3. Testosterone- According to research, men with more testosterone are more likely to grow a fuller, darker beard. Now we understand where the notion about bearded men being manlier than non-bearded men comes from! (All information in this blog is based off of secondary research and Mandevu will not be held accountable for any offence taken…)
  1. Age- The usual age for a boy’s beard to start growing is around the age of 13. However, what is known as the ‘beard prime phase’ is the age of 25 -35! This is said to be the point where your beard grows to its fullest length and the period where it will look its best through your entire beard journey. Enjoy your prime!
